Electric Water Heater With No Hot Water? Check the Electrical First
Before you assume the tank is shot, a few electrical checks can save you a plumber's bill: a tripped breaker, a tripped high-limit reset, or a failed heating element. Here's what to look at — and where the line is.

When an electric water heater stops making hot water, plenty of people call a plumber and end up paying for an electrical fix they could have checked themselves. Work these in order — safely, with the power off.
1. Check the breaker
Water heaters are on a dedicated 240V double-pole breaker. Look for one that's tripped (handle in the middle) and reset it fully OFF then ON. If it trips again right away, stop — that's a fault (shorted element or wiring), not a nuisance trip, and it needs diagnosis.
2. Press the high-limit reset
Most electric heaters have a red reset button behind the upper access panel — the high-limit or ECO switch. If the water overheated, it trips and cuts power. Turn off the breaker, remove the upper cover and the insulation behind it, and press the red button; you may feel a click. If it holds, great. If it keeps tripping, a thermostat or element is failing — don't just keep resetting it, because that switch is your last line of defense against a scalding, fire-risk overheat.
3. Test the heating elements
Most tanks have two elements. A burned-out element is the most common "no hot water" or "not enough hot water" cause. With the power off and the element wires disconnected, meter across the element terminals:
- Low resistance (roughly 10–16 ohms): element is good.
- Infinite / open: element is burned out — replace it.
A telltale pattern: a little hot water that turns cold fast usually means the lower element is dead (the upper one heats only the top of the tank).
Where the line is
Checking the breaker and pressing the high-limit reset are easy homeowner steps. Swapping elements and thermostats on a 240V tank is within reach for the confident, but the combination of 240 volts and water means there's no shame in handing it to a pro or plumber. And if the tank itself is leaking, no electrical fix will help — that tank is done.
