Furnace or AC Not Turning On? Check These Electrical Causes First
Before you call for HVAC service, a handful of electrical checks catch the most common no-heat/no-cool causes: a tripped breaker, a flipped furnace switch, a blown low-voltage fuse, or a dead thermostat. Here's the homeowner checklist.

When the heat or AC quits, an HVAC service call isn't always necessary — several of the most common causes are electrical and homeowner-checkable. Run this list before you pay for a visit.
1. The furnace service switch
This is the most-missed cause of a dead furnace. There's usually a switch — often looking exactly like a light switch, sometimes red, in a metal box on or near the furnace. It gets flipped off by accident constantly, especially in garages and basements. Check it first.
2. The breaker (and the outdoor disconnect)
Find the HVAC breaker(s) in your panel and reset any that tripped. For central AC, there's also an outdoor disconnect — a pull-out box on the wall near the condenser unit; make sure it's fully seated. If a breaker trips again immediately, stop: that's a fault (often a failing motor or capacitor), and repeated resets can do damage.
3. The thermostat
A blank thermostat can't call for heat or cool. Put in fresh batteries if yours uses them. If it's still blank, it has likely lost its 24-volt control power — commonly a blown low-voltage fuse (a small 3A or 5A automotive-style fuse on the furnace control board) or a tripped condensate float switch (a safety that cuts the system when the AC drain backs up). Emptying the drain line can bring a tripped float switch back.
4. Where it becomes a tech's job
If you've confirmed power at the unit — breaker on, switch on, thermostat alive — and it still won't run, the trouble is inside the HVAC system: a run capacitor, a motor, a contactor, or the control board. Those are inexpensive parts in some cases, but diagnosing and replacing them safely on a live 240V unit is an HVAC technician's work.

Switch, breaker/disconnect, thermostat, low-voltage fuse and float switch — check those four areas and you'll catch a large share of "no heat / no cool" calls yourself. And always: a gas smell near a furnace is not a DIY moment — leave and call the gas utility.
