How to Bend EMT Conduit by Hand: A Beginner's Walkthrough

Know Your Bender Before You Bend Anything

Every hand bender - 1/2", 3/4", 1" EMT - is stamped with its take-up (deduct) and has arrows or a star marking the point where the conductor centerline lines up for a 90. Cheap benders and name-brand benders (Klein, Ideal, Greenlee) can have slightly different deduct values even in the same conduit size, so check the marking on the actual tool in your hand, not what you remember from a different bender.

The 90-Degree Stub

This is the bend you'll do ten thousand times in your career, so get it right early. Say you need a stub-up of 12 inches measured from the floor to the top of the bend. Mark that 12" point on the conduit. Subtract the bender's deduct (commonly 5" for 1/2" EMT, 6" for 3/4") from that mark, and that's where you actually align the arrow or star on the bender - not the 12" mark itself. This confuses every apprentice the first week: you're not bending at the mark, you're bending short of it by the deduct amount, because the bend itself takes up conduit length as the pipe curves.

Foot on the heel of the bender, hand on the handle, and bend smoothly to the level mark on the bender head for a true 90. Don't rock the bender or bend in short jerky pulls - one smooth motion keeps the bend consistent and keeps you from ovaling the conduit.

Back-to-Back Bends

For a bend that goes from wall to wall or box to box, measure the total distance and mark your conduit at that length, then bend a 90 at each end using the same deduct logic - align the star mark at the total distance minus the deduct on one end, bend, flip the conduit, measure and mark the second point, align, bend again. Keep the bender oriented the same way (star facing up, same reference edge) on both ends or your bends will twist relative to each other.

Offsets

An offset gets you around an obstruction - a beam, a duct, a thicker box - while keeping the run parallel on both sides. Two bends, made in opposite directions, separated by a specific distance. The two most common angles are 30-30 and 45-45 (though 10-10 and 22.5-22.5 show up too). For a 30-degree offset, the shrinkage (how much overall length you lose) is roughly 1/4" per inch of offset depth; for 45 degrees it's roughly 3/8" per inch. Mark your first bend point, roll the conduit to the offset depth using the offset marks on the bender handle (most benders have degree marks at 10, 22.5, 30, and 45), bend, then measure your travel distance and make the second bend in the opposite direction at the same angle.

Saddles (Three-Point and Four-Point)

A saddle clears an obstruction that crosses your run perpendicular - a pipe or duct in the way with clearance on both sides. The classic three-point saddle is a center bend (usually 45 degrees, sometimes bigger for a taller obstruction) with two smaller bends on either side (typically 22.5 degrees each) to bring the conduit back level. Mark the center of the obstruction on the conduit first, then measure out equally in both directions for the side bends - get the center mark right or the whole saddle sits crooked.

Gain

Gain is the flip side of deduct - on a 90, the actual arc of bent conduit takes up less linear space than the equivalent straight-line distance from the two legs, and gain is the amount you get back. It matters most on longer stub-ups or back-to-back runs where precision counts. Most hand benders have a gain table stamped or printed right on them; use it instead of guessing.

Practice Advice From the Field

Buy a few extra sticks of 1/2" EMT before your first real bending day and just burn through them making 90s until the deduct math is automatic and your bends come out square without checking a level every time. A crooked stub-up on scrap conduit costs nothing; a crooked stub-up on a finished panel feed in front of the GC costs you credibility.
