The Panel Is the Bottleneck Most People Don't Think About

Homeowners plan their smart home around devices - switches, an EV charger, maybe a hot tub someday - but the electrical panel is what determines whether any of it actually fits. Every circuit you add or upgrade draws from the panel's total capacity, and older panels, especially 100-amp panels common in houses built before the 1980s, run out of room faster than people expect once you start adding higher-draw equipment.

What Your Panel's Amperage Actually Limits

A 100-amp panel isn't necessarily a problem for basic smart switches, plugs, and sensors - those draw very little power. Where it becomes a real constraint is bigger additions: an EV charger, a hot tub, a heat pump, or a home battery/backup system. Adding any of those to a panel that's already near capacity can mean you either can't add the circuit at all, or you need what's called a load management device that shares power between circuits so you don't exceed what the panel or your utility service can safely deliver.

Smart switches, hubs, and networking gear are all sensitive electronics, and a single lightning strike or utility power surge can fry thousands of dollars of smart devices in an instant. A whole-home surge protector installs directly in or next to your panel and protects everything downstream - it's a relatively inexpensive add-on with an outsized payoff if you've invested in a lot of smart equipment.

Where the Panel Meets the Smart Home Hub

Some whole-home automation and energy monitoring systems need direct wiring at the panel - current transformers clamped around your main wires, load management modules, or a dedicated circuit for the hub itself. This is different from swapping a wall switch; it means opening the panel and working near energized components, and I don't recommend homeowners attempt this themselves.

What's Realistic for Most Houses

For typical smart switches, plugs, and sensors, most panels handle it fine with no upgrade needed. Once you're talking EV chargers, hot tubs, home batteries, or a major automation hub that ties into the panel, that's the point to get a load calculation done and find out whether you need a sub-panel, a service upgrade, or just some breaker rearranging.
