Here are ten of the most common, why they matter, and how to get them right. Codes change by NEC cycle and local amendment — always verify the edition your jurisdiction enforces.
1. Overfilled boxes (box fill)
Cramming too many conductors, devices, and clamps into a box exceeds its cubic-inch capacity, traps heat, and stresses connections. Count your box fill (NEC 314.16) and use a deeper or larger box when needed. See box fill explained.
2. Missing AFCI protection
AFCI now covers most living-area circuits, and it's easy to miss one — especially on remodels where added or extended circuits trigger current requirements. Check the required-locations list for your edition.
3. Missing or wrong GFCI protection

4. Unsupported or unsecured cables
NM cable needs to be stapled/secured within the required distance of boxes and at intervals along the run, and supported properly. Loose, drooping, or unsecured cable is a routine write-up.
5. Missing physical protection (nail plates)
Cables run through studs within 1¼" of the edge need steel protection plates so a drywall screw or nail can't pierce them. Cheap to add, commonly forgotten.
6. Backstabbed / loose connections
Backstabbed receptacles and loose terminations arc and overheat. Use the screw terminals (or better, pigtail), and torque connections properly. Loose connections are a leading fire cause.
7. Bootleg grounds and reversed polarity
Jumpering a "ground" from the neutral (bootleg ground) or reversing hot and neutral creates shock hazards that a basic tester may not catch. Wire it correctly and verify.
8. Improper neutral/ground bonding in subpanels

9. Wrong wire/breaker pairing
12 AWG on a 15 A breaker is fine; 14 AWG on a 20 A breaker is not. Undersized conductors on oversized breakers remove the overcurrent protection the wire depends on. Match them.
10. Missing tamper-resistant / weather-resistant receptacles
TR receptacles are required in dwelling areas, and WR + in-use covers outdoors. Standard outlets where TR/WR are required is an easy, common miss.
