Best Conduit Benders: Hand Benders vs. Hydraulic
The right bender depends entirely on conduit size and how much of it you're bending in a day, not on which one is objectively 'best.' Here's how to think through hand benders, mechanical benders, and hydraulic benders so you're not fighting the wrong tool on a big rigid job.

Hand Benders: The Everyday Tool
For EMT from 1/2" up through about 1", a hand bender is what you'll reach for constantly - it's fast, portable, and requires no setup beyond finding your deduct mark. Steel hand benders hold up to daily commercial abuse better than aluminum, but aluminum benders are noticeably lighter, which matters if you're carrying one up and down ladders and through attics all day rather than leaving it staged at a bench. Beyond 1" EMT, hand bending gets physically demanding fast and accuracy starts to suffer - that's the point to start looking at mechanical or hydraulic options.
Mechanical (Ratchet) Benders
A step up from a hand bender for 1" to 2" rigid or IMC, a mechanical or ratchet bender uses a hand-operated ratchet mechanism to generate the leverage a straight hand bend can't at that size, without the cost or bulk of a hydraulic unit. It's slower than hydraulic per bend but far more portable, doesn't need a power source, and is a reasonable middle ground for a crew that bends larger conduit occasionally rather than constantly.
Hydraulic Benders: Built for Volume and Large Sizes
Once you're bending 1-1/4" through 4" rigid or IMC regularly, hydraulic is the only realistic option - hand and mechanical benders simply can't generate enough force accurately at that size without excessive time and physical strain. Hydraulic benders use a hydraulic ram (hand-pumped, electric, or battery-powered depending on the model) to drive the shoe through the bend with far more consistency than muscle alone, especially important on large rigid conduit where an inconsistent bend can kink or flatten expensive material fast. The tradeoff is weight, cost, and the fact that you generally need it staged near the work rather than carried around like a hand bender.
Shoe Sizing Is Not Universal
Every bender - hand, mechanical, or hydraulic - needs a shoe matched to the specific conduit size and type you're bending. A shoe sized for EMT will not give you an accurate bend on rigid of the same nominal size, because rigid has a thicker wall and different outside diameter characteristics at some sizes. Keep your shoe inventory matched to what you actually run, and don't assume a shoe is interchangeable across EMT and rigid/IMC just because the nominal size matches.
EMT vs. Rigid: Different Bending Behavior
EMT is thinner-walled and bends with meaningfully less force, which is exactly why hand benders work fine up to 1" or so. Rigid and IMC have thicker walls, which means they resist kinking better under a good bend but require significantly more force to bend at all - this is the core reason rigid work pushes you toward mechanical or hydraulic tools much sooner in the size range than EMT does.
Rent or Buy?
If hydraulic-size bending is a rare event on your jobs - the occasional 2" rigid service run - renting a hydraulic bender for that job usually makes more financial sense than owning one that sits in the shop most of the year. If your crew regularly runs larger rigid or IMC as a normal part of the work, owning pays for itself fast in reduced downtime and not being at the mercy of rental availability mid-job.
