Start With What 210.12 Actually Covers

Every cycle I get a call from a guy who "thought bedrooms were the only AFCI rooms." That hasn't been true since 2014, and the 2020 NEC expanded it further. NEC 210.12(A) requires AFCI protection for 120-volt, single-phase, 15- and 20-amp branch circuits supplying outlets or devices in dwelling unit kitchens, family rooms, dining rooms, living rooms, parlors, libraries, dens, bedrooms, sunrooms, recreation rooms, closets, hallways, laundry areas, and "similar rooms or areas." That last phrase is doing a lot of work — it's why inspectors push AFCI into home offices, exercise rooms, and finished basements that don't fit a named category.

Room by Room, What I Actually Wire

Kitchens — yes, AFCI applies here, and since 2017 it stacks with GFCI on countertop receptacle circuits. Most of us handle that with a dual-function (AFCI/GFCI combination) breaker rather than trying to layer a GFCI receptacle downstream of an AFCI breaker and chase nuisance trips all day.

Bedrooms — the original AFCI room, still the one inspectors check first. Every outlet, including the smoke detector circuit if it's on a general lighting circuit, needs coverage.

Laundry areas — commonly missed because guys mentally file laundry under "GFCI only." It's not. 210.12(A) lists laundry areas by name, and 210.11(C)(2) still wants that dedicated 20-amp laundry circuit — combine them with a combination AFCI breaker.

Hallways and closets — these get overlooked because there's often just one light and no receptacle. Doesn't matter — the circuit supplying that outlet still needs protection if it feeds through a covered space.

Bathrooms — notice bathrooms are NOT on the 210.12(A) list. GFCI is mandatory there (210.8(A)(1)), but AFCI is not required by the base code. I still tell apprentices to read that twice, because it trips people up in both directions — some skip GFCI thinking AFCI covers it, some add AFCI unnecessarily.

Garages and unfinished basements — also not on the list, and also GFCI-only territory unless your local jurisdiction amended it (some have).

Outlet vs. Circuit — The Distinction That Matters

210.12 protects the branch circuit, not just the room. If a hallway outlet is fed off a bedroom circuit, the whole circuit needs AFCI, not just the receptacle nearest the bed. I've seen guys try to get clever with a single AFCI receptacle at the first device on the run, thinking it protects everything downstream the way GFCI does. It can, technically, if wired correctly at the first outlet with all downstream conductors run to code — but on a service call or remodel where you can't verify the whole home run, a breaker is the only way I sign off on it with confidence.

Combination Type Is the Standard Now

Since 2014, 210.12 has required combination-type AFCI devices, not the older branch/feeder-only style. Combination AFCIs detect both series and parallel arcing, which is what actually catches a damaged cord or a nicked romex behind drywall. If you're still pulling old branch-feeder breakers out of a box in the shop, they don't meet current code for new work.

Where Local Amendments Change the Picture

Oregon and a lot of other jurisdictions amend NEC editions before adoption, and AFCI has been a frequent target — some jurisdictions delayed dwelling unit expansion, others added requirements the base NEC doesn't have. Don't assume your state amendment tracks the NEC edition exactly. Pull your local amendment sheet before you bid a remodel, because retrofitting AFCI into an older panel with limited breaker space changes your material cost fast.

Field Note

Nuisance tripping is still the #1 complaint I get on AFCI. Before you blame the breaker, check for shared neutrals on multi-wire branch circuits, LED drivers with poor power factor, and long runs with marginal connections. Nine times out of ten it's a real wiring issue the breaker is correctly catching, not a bad breaker.
